Children under 9 years old — or under 1.35 m tall and 33 kg — must generally use an approved child restraint suited to their size and weight.

In practice, children under 12 should travel in the rear seat; the front seat for children is heavily restricted.

Install and use the system per the car and seat manufacturer instructions; harness and seat belt must be properly adjusted.

Non-compliance can be a serious traffic offence, with fines and other penalties depending on the case.

On public roads, enforcement of the Traffic Law — including correct use of child restraints — is mainly carried out by Carabineros de Chile (Chile’s national police). Officers may stop your vehicle and check that children are properly secured and that equipment is installed correctly. Depending on current regulations and the municipality, municipal traffic inspectors may also carry out checks, as may any other authorities the law assigns enforcement powers to.
